Description.
The UNiKA PRO-STP is a loudspeaker tester specifically designed for audio engineers. In environments without power amplifiers, engineers can use the UNiKA PRO-STP to directly output pink noise and test the impedance of the loudspeaker system, or to send pink noise to the mixing console for general system testing.
The pink noise level can be adjusted for subwoofers, midrange drivers, compression drivers, and tweeters. TheUNiKA PRO-STP features an XLR line output for feeding pink noise into self-powered loudspeakers.
A DC OHMS TEST button applies a voltage of 5 VDC to the push-button selectable output terminals to observe cone movement and thus detect polarity errors in the loudspeakers and wiring. Additionally, a DC ohm test is performed, with three LEDs indicating the approximate ranges of 4, 8, or 16 ohms. This helps in detecting defective speakers in enclosures where the diaphragms are not readily visible, or in enclosures with multiple speakers in parallel-series configurations.
The PRO-STP can be powered either by 4 AA batteries or by an external 1A/6VDC power adapter (not included).
How the impedance test works :
The DC ohm test measures the DC resistance of the voice coil circuit connected to the output terminals selected by one of the pushbuttons. This function helps identify burned-out drivers in enclosures with multiple drivers in series-parallel configurations.
Three LEDs indicate values of 4, 8, or 16 Ω.
The green LED glows from 1.8 to 3.6Ω.
The yellow LED glows from 3.6 to 7.2Ω.
The red LED glows from 7.2 to 14.4Ω.
Pressing the switch applies a 5VDC voltage to the selected output terminals, which can also be used to determine the polarity of a cone speaker and to identify speaker and wiring faults. The current limiting at the output should protect compression drivers and tweeters, although caution should be exercised as with any battery test. Excessive cable length may result in slightly higher readings.
